An electronic module that amplifies logic-level direction/PWM signals into bidirectional current for motors.

Your controller tells the driver which way and how fast; the driver handles the heavy current the motor needs.

H-bridges switch polarity for direction; PWM controls average voltage. Stepper drivers chop windings for microstepping. Thermal resistance and RDS(on) define continuous current without shutdown.

Drives DC brushed motors, steppers, or (on dedicated modules) provides appropriate interfaces for motor classes the MCU cannot power directly.

Small DC motor drivers

small_dc

Pricing target: needs sourced range
Qualitative guidance onlyNeeds review

Low-current H-bridge and driver modules cover small gearmotors and toy-class loads. Cost is modest but failure modes come from voltage and current mis-match, not driver headline price.

Typical buyer

Small rovers, line followers, lightweight mechanisms.

Examples

Dual H-bridge modules, small motor shield channels, low-A driver boards.

What affects cost

  • →Continuous vs peak current rating
  • →Single vs dual channel
  • →Logic level and PWM interface
  • →Brand vs generic module

Price usually excludes

power supplycontroller/drivercables/connectorsmounting hardwareshippingtaxes/tariffssoftware/licenseintegration timesupport/warranty plan

Buyer caution

Peak current on datasheets is not continuous duty. Verify heat sinking and motor stall current before ordering the cheapest module.

Source basis

Category-level qualitative guidance — no SKU-linked distributor band yet.

Open research gaps

  • Sourced USD band — small DC motor driver modules — No sourced numeric band in EAR. Next: Distributor listing spot-check (Digi-Key, Mouser, Pololu, OEM)

Verify current pricing with supplier before ordering.

High-current DC motor drivers

high_current_dc

Pricing target: needs sourced range
Qualitative guidance onlyNeeds review

High-current bridges and smart drivers jump in cost with MOSFET quality, thermal design, and current sensing. Robotics platforms with larger gearmotors land here.

Typical buyer

Heavy rovers, load-bearing drivetrains, competition robots.

Examples

RoboClaw-class smart drivers, high-A dual bridges, VNH-style modules.

What affects cost

  • →Continuous current and voltage ceiling
  • →Encoder/feedback inputs and closed-loop features
  • →Heat dissipation and enclosure
  • →Smart driver firmware vs bare H-bridge

Price usually excludes

power supplycontroller/drivercables/connectorsmounting hardwareshippingtaxes/tariffssoftware/licenseintegration timesupport/warranty plan

Buyer caution

Undersized drivers fail silently under thermal foldback. Price the driver for continuous stall scenarios or add current limits in software.

Source basis

Category-level qualitative guidance — no SKU-linked distributor band yet.

Open research gaps

  • Sourced USD band — high-current DC motor drivers — No sourced numeric band in EAR. Next: Distributor listing spot-check (Digi-Key, Mouser, Pololu, OEM)

Stepper motor drivers

stepper

Pricing target: needs sourced range
Qualitative guidance onlyNeeds review

Stepper drivers range from bare IC breakout to integrated TMC-class boards with microstepping. Cost scales with current, silent drive features, and channel count.

Typical buyer

CNC-adjacent robots, gantry arms, 3D-printer-derived motion stacks.

Examples

A4988/DRV8825-class modules, TMC2209 silent drivers, multi-axis boards.

What affects cost

  • →Peak/current rating and microstepping
  • →Silent/StealthChop-class features
  • →Standalone vs SPI/UART configurability
  • →Quantity (Prusa-style bulk vs single replacement)

Price usually excludes

power supplycontroller/drivercables/connectorsmounting hardwareshippingtaxes/tariffssoftware/licenseintegration timesupport/warranty plan

Buyer caution

Stepper driver voltage and current must match motor coil specs. Wrong microstep config causes vibration — not a reason to swap driver brands blindly.

Source basis

Category-level qualitative guidance — no SKU-linked distributor band yet.

Open research gaps

  • Sourced USD band — stepper driver modules by current tier — No sourced numeric band in EAR. Next: Distributor listing spot-check (Digi-Key, Mouser, Pololu, OEM)

Brushless motor controllers

bldc

Pricing target: needs sourced range
Qualitative guidance onlyNeeds review

BLDC ESCs and field-oriented control boards vary with peak amp rating, sensorless vs sensored, and protocol (PWM, CAN, drone-style). Drone ESC pricing is not industrial servo-drive pricing.

Typical buyer

Drones, high-RPM drivetrains, propulsion, some joint actuators.

Examples

Multirotor ESCs, sensored BLDC controllers, VESC-class boards.

What affects cost

  • →Peak and continuous amp rating
  • →Sensored vs sensorless, CAN vs PWM
  • →Firmware features and telemetry
  • →Aviation vs ground robotics duty cycle

Price usually excludes

power supplycontroller/drivercables/connectorsmounting hardwareshippingtaxes/tariffssoftware/licenseintegration timesupport/warranty plan

Buyer caution

Drone ESCs may lack holding torque features needed for ground robotics joints. Verify braking, direction, and feedback before substituting.

Source basis

Category-level qualitative guidance — no SKU-linked distributor band yet.

Industrial drives

industrial

Pricing target: needs sourced range
Qualitative guidance onlyNeeds review

Industrial VFDs and servo drives are quoted with motor pairing, fieldbus, and safety options. EAR requires sourced records before publishing numeric bands.

Typical buyer

Machine builders, factory automation, AMR OEM drivetrains.

Examples

Servo drives, VFDs, integrated drive+motor packages.

What affects cost

  • →Power kW rating and regen/braking options
  • →Fieldbus and safety STO features
  • →Authorized channel vs gray market
  • →Spares vs current product line

Price usually excludes

power supplycontroller/drivercables/connectorsmounting hardwareshippingtaxes/tariffssoftware/licenseintegration timesupport/warranty planmotor pairing engineeringfieldbus modulescommissioning

Buyer caution

Industrial drives are not interchangeable with hobby ESCs. Firmware, motor constants, and safety certification must match the application.

Source basis

Category-level qualitative guidance — no OEM or distributor band verified in EAR.
